how much do you spend on your chihuahua per year (including airfare for travel, vet costs, food, toys, puppy furniture, ect)? i heard it was about $1300 from some woman who quoted the akc. is this true? i do not plan on buying chi clothes (except a winter coat or 2 for whatever chi i get). i would like to hear from chi owners so i can get a rough estimate before i commit. thanks

It is far more than $1,300 I can assure you. You have forgotten the:
Chihuahua nailpolish
Chihuahua monthly bikini wax
Chihauhua kick boxing lessons
Chihuahua defensive driving course and so much more….
You are clearly not ready for a Chihuahua.
if you only have 1 outfit for it and feed it regular food, about $500 a year will cover it all. only feed then what the pack suggests, because there is nothing worse than a fat chihuahua. vet cost vary, but on average, it’s shots and desexing should only cost about $150. where is the dog going?? i think its about $60 for it to travel on the same flight as you. if you buy long lasting toys, like a Kong, you will reduce the cost. Personally, i think a basket would suffice as a bed, (mine sleep in them) and there is no need to “spoil” these dogs as they are highly strung to start with, and putting them on a pedestal wont help it.
Chihuahua’s don’t cost much in real terms to keep. They don’t eat much, they don’t take up much space.
Your standard yearly expenses will be your annual vaccinations, worming and flea/tick/heart worm treatment, apart from those everything else is up to you.
Initial expenditure will include neutering, puppy vaccination course, crate, bed, blanket and puppy classes.
Basically, you can spend as much as you want on added-extras. Toys, chews, coats, beds etc.
I’m sure you will find yourself impulse buying toys, coats and chews - it’s very difficult not to!
for a chihuahua you do not need to buy it clothes as it has been given fur to keep warm.and for vet cost are you gonna microchip the dog and vaccinate it. What do you mean by puppy furniture? i presume you mean a dog bed. you can just get a woven wooden basket. more dogs sleep on that than on a dog bed. Always remember that whether you are getting a st Bernard or a great Dane or a chihuahua, they all contain huge responsibilities . You would have to pay about $2500 in the first year and $1500 to $2000 in subsequent years.
Ray M - you obviously don’t own a Chihuahua and live in a cold climate. If you’re going to train your Chihuahua (ESPECIALLY a puppy) to go outside to the bathroom sweaters/jackets ARE a necessity. If I took my baby outside now, in our 30 degree weather (which is actually on the warm side compared to our other winter months) her little 4lb body would shiver like crazy. And many many Chihuahua’s are much smaller than her. Please don’t give the spew about “that’s what they are given fur for”. They are small & most don’t have a whole lot of that fur!
I’ve not owned my Chi long enough to give estimates on what she costs us but the ones here sound pretty accurate. Though there is always the unexpected that could happen to incure added vet bills. They’re so tiny & fragile - I’ve heard so many stories about broken bones, etc.
Same as any other small dog. The only money you’ll save with a Chi is buying less food and saving a bit on monthly heartworm and flea prevention since the cost is based on weight.
I make sure I have about $2,000 each yr for each of my dogs, in case of emergencies, but I’d estimate it as around $1,000-$1,500 of actual expenses.
